Layout/Design: Books

The layout and design of a book (magazine, brochure, manual, etc.) is more than just typesetting.  Typesetting is just text on a page with a more decorative typeface/font for chapter numbers, chapter titles, and subheads; plus headers, footers, page numbers, and an occasional bulleted list.

Layout and design includes typesetting plus graphical elements such as decorative bullets, lines, boxes, and shading; plus charts, graphs, illustrations, and/or photography. This process takes much longer than straight typesetting because so many different elements are required to produce the final product.

Rates (minimum rate for any job is $50)

Typesetting – just text on a page – $40.00 an hour

Layout/Design – with simple graphical elements only; e.g., decorative bullets, lines, boxes, and shading - $50.00 an hour

Layout/Design – with other graphics (from our library); e.g., charts, graphs, illustrations, and/or photography - $60.00 an hour plus:

	$5 to $10 each for edited clipart or stock photography (based on how much editing is required) plus cost of the image
	$50 to $200 per image for original artwork or photography (based on complication of image)

Layout/Design – with your custom illustrations and/or photography – $50.00 an hour (if all work is completely camera ready; i.e., the correct resolution, size, and file format).

Rates for scanning your images plus cropping, sizing, editing, etc. are quoted separately.
